Special Education

Central Point School District 6 (CPSD6) is seeks assistance in locating children with disabilities (birth through age 21) who have not graduated from high school and currently are not attending nor receiving other special services from public schools.

Oregon and federal law mandate educational services for children with disabilities. CPSD6 offer a wide range of services to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities. Highly trained staff team up with parents to evaluate and develop individual plans to support students with disabilities. If you have a concern that your child may have a disability, please contact your child's teacher or school principal.

Parents, guardians, or anyone who knows of a child (age five through 21*) with a disability currently not receiving educational services are asked to notify the special education contact person in the child's home school or contact the School District Special Services Department at 541.494.6230.

*The Douglas Education Service District provides educational services for eligible children from birth to kindergarten. For children younger than kindergarten, please telephone the Jackson County EI/ECSE at 541.494.7800.

There are three key elements to being eligible to receive special education services:

• A child with a disability must meet criteria established in the Oregon regulations related to IDEA. Per these regulations, a student must meet specific criteria in at least one of the following disability categories, based on the results of a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the school district:
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Communication Disorder
  • Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Deafblindness
  • Developmental Delay
  • Emotional Behavior Disorder
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Orthopedic Impairment
  • Other Health Impairment
  • Specific Learning Disability
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Visual Impairment

• In addition to meeting the criteria for a disability, it must be shown that the disability is having an adverse impact on the child’s developmental or educational performance; and,
• That the child requires special education services as a result of the disability.

Note: A medical or psychiatric diagnosis does not automatically qualify a student for Special Education services.  However, the district must consider that information when conducting a child’s comprehensive evaluation.

Evaluation referrals may only come from two sources [OAR 581-015-2105(2)]:

• The student’s parent or guardian, or
• A public agency, such as a school district, an ESD, or the Oregon Department of Human Services.

Requests cannot be made directly by physicians, psychiatrists, counselors, or other non-education professionals.

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) produces yearly At-A-Glance School and District Profiles, including a Special Education Profile. These reports provide educators with an opportunity to communicate directly with parents and community members about how local schools are performing.
