TWI Spanish Program
Overview
Our middle school Two-Way Spanish Immersion program consists of 50% of our students' day in middle school classes in Spanish and half of the day in English. Students take Spanish language arts, Spanish social studies, Spanish science (3) and English math, English elective and a second English elective (3).
Our program is hugely popular and students at the middle school level have to demonstrate grade level performance in both languages in order to enroll in our program.

How do TWI students perform academically?
Your question about how TWI students perform is a good one. The simple answer is our students have an average score at or above grade level in both languages by the end of fifth grade. Here’s the most recent comparative data:
In 5th grade, TWI students outscored their English only counterparts in Math by 13 percentile points. (average 37th percentile vs 23rd)
In 5th grade, TWI students outscored their English only counterparts in English Language Arts by 25 percentile points. (average 66th percentile vs 41st percentile)
What are the benefits to enrolling my student in middle school TWI?
Middle school TWI helps students solidify the knowledge and skills they gained as bilingual individuals in elementary school. Students continue to practice and elevate their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and access grade level content.
Students test at the end of eighth grade for both high school credits and the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy. Based on their test results, they can earn up to six high school credits (Spanish I, II & III). They then take Spanish IV & V as part of their high school TWI block for college credits. If students score high enough, they can use their scores as foundational test scores to receive their Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy when they graduate from high school.
